December 2014 - January 2015
English competition (20th January, GVM)
In January traditionally the competition in English language is held – it consists of a listening paper and then a speaking paper during which the students have to describe a picture and speak about one of the topics such as my family, school, my home town, my friends, food and drinks and travelling. There are three age categories and the students of PRIMA and SEKUNDA (aged 11-14) compete in the first category. This year the school round took place on Monday 19th January. Who won? Jan Vodstrčil was the best and David Hrabě came the second. Congratulations! In February Jan is going to take part in the district round. You can help us keep the fingers crossed for him.
Winter full of Angels (5th January, GVM)
Have you seen an angel? We mean a real angel and not in a film but face to face? Probably not. However, in the library of Vysoké Mýto you can see pictures of angels and winter painted by the young students of our school. The pictures are exhibited in the entrance hall and they are really amazing and cheering so all the people coming to borrow books there get into good mood.
Christmas party (19th December, GVM)
The 19th December was the last day at school before the Christmas holidays for the Czech students (the first day to be back is Monday 5th January). There were regular classes only till 10 o´clock, then all the students gathered on the staircase and sang a few Christmas songs and carols together. After that the students returned to their classrooms and had Christmas parties playing various games and eating Christmas sweets. You can see some photos from these parties (in classes PRIMA and SEKUNDA) below. You can also listen to some of the carols and songs.
The Nutcracker (10th December, GVM)
On 10th December, the youngest students of our school (aged 11/12) went by train to the city of Brno (the second largest city in the Czech Republic and the capital of Moravia) to see the ballet The Nutcracker (in Czech Louskáček). It happened that they came to the theatre late as the train was stopped because of an accident on the rail. Nevertheless they saw most of the performance and enjoyed it a lot. It certainly contributed to the pre-Christmas spirit.
You can learn more about the famous ballet here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nutcracker.
St. Nicolas Day (5th December, GVM)
There is a tradition in our school - every year, on 5th December, the under-graduates (aged 18/19) get dressed as St. Nicolas, devils and angels and they visit their younger schoolmates in their classrooms during the morning lessons (which the young students don´t mind as the teaching is interrupted for a few minutes and it´s fun) and give them nuts and sweets. Usually the kids don´t get the treats for free - they have to sing a song or say a poem first. You can read about this custom more here:
